4 Must-Know SPM Maths Chapters for Form 4 & Form 5 Students
Artikel blog kami hanya tersedia dalam Bahasa Inggeris buat masa ini.
Preparing for SPM Maths can feel overwhelming. With the KSSM Maths syllabus covering topics across Form 4 and Form 5, students have a lot of chapters to revise, and not every chapter deserves the same amount of revision time.
In our previous post, we covered four chapters worth prioritising before SPM. Here are four more chapters to add to your revision list.
The goal isn’t to memorise everything. It’s to understand the concepts, practise applying them, and build confidence one chapter at a time.
Chapters To Master Before SPM (Part 2)
- Graphs of Motion (Form 4)
- Operations on Sets (Form 4)
- Consumer Mathematics: Insurance & Taxation (Form 5)
- Probability of Combined Events (Form 4)
1. Graphs of Motion (Form 4)
Two ideas are especially important here:
Gradient = speed or acceleration
Area under the graph = distance
Graphs of Motion has appeared for around 3–9 marks in Paper 2 across recent SPM papers analysed. The exact number can vary from year to year and depending on how the question is structured. That makes it a useful chapter to include in your SPM Maths revision.
More importantly, the chapter is built around a few key concepts. Instead of memorising different methods for every question, students should focus on understanding what the graph is telling them. A useful question to ask is: “What does this graph actually represent?”
That small shift can make the chapter much easier to understand.
2. Operations on Sets (Form 4)
Sets are relatively straightforward once the underlying logic clicks. They also provide a useful foundation for understanding probability, where students need to think carefully about events and how they relate to one another.
Operations on Sets has appeared for around 3–8 marks in Paper 2 across recent SPM papers analysed, although the exact allocation can vary between papers.
For SPM Maths preparation, make sure to understand why a particular region is being shaded. Once that logic makes sense, the questions become much less intimidating.
3. Consumer Mathematics: Insurance & Taxation (Form 5)
According to the chapter guide, Insurance & Taxation is a high-priority part of the newer KSSM content and can appear in Paper 2 Section C, including case-study style questions.
That means students need more than just formula recall. They need to be comfortable reading the situation, identifying the relevant information, and applying the right calculation.
A good way to practise this chapter is to slow down. Read the question carefully. Highlight the information you need. Then work through the calculation step by step.
In other words: don’t let the long word problem scare you before you’ve even started.
4. Probability of Combined Events (Form 4)
Probability carries significant weight in Paper 1 and can also appear as part of more complex problem-solving questions in Paper 2. That makes Probability an important area to include when planning your SPM Maths revision.
Start with simple scenarios. Make sure you can identify the possible outcomes. Then gradually move towards questions involving combined events and tree diagrams.
Once you understand how the events connect, probability becomes much less about guessing and much more about following the logic.
How to Approach SPM Maths Preparation
Between these four chapters and the four we covered in Part 1, that’s 8 KSSM Maths chapters worth prioritising as part of your SPM Maths preparation. But remember: prioritising doesn’t mean rushing through them.
You would still need to work through the full KSSM Maths Form 4 and Form 5 syllabus. These chapters simply provide a useful starting point when revision time is limited.
The most important thing is to focus on understanding before memorising.
Instead of trying to cram an entire chapter in one sitting, break revision into smaller steps: Understand the concept → Try a question → Check the steps → Learn from mistakes → Practise again.
Over time, these small steps can build both understanding and confidence.
And when your child gets stuck, having somewhere to ask questions can make a big difference. That’s where Tupai comes in. With Tupai, students can ask questions, work through problems step by step, practise different types of questions and review where they went wrong.
